Although some people think that fitness means cardiovascular stamina alone or big muscles, true fitness encompasses cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance and flexibility. With the proper workout balance you can achieve true fitness.
Cardiovascular endurance comes from conditioning your heart and lungs by elevating your heart rate and keeping it high during workouts. Muscular strength and endurance improves by training against resistance, such as dumbbells, barbells and resistance bands and tubing. And flexibility is the range of motion around a joint, which can be enhanced with yoga and stretching.
So it’s important to include cardio, strength training and stretching in your regime to develop both muscle and fitness.
One easy way to hit both cardio and strength within the same workout is Octane’s CROSS CiRCUIT, which combines cardio intervals on the elliptical with strength training exercises next to the elliptical. You work on aerobic endurance during the cardio intervals (which are a few minutes each), and then perform strength exercises such as squats, lunges, rows, push-ups, biceps curls and more using PowerBlocks or Octane’s Powerbands for a minute or two. Then it’s back to the elliptical for cardio.
A 30-minute workout of this back-and-forth will leave you sweating and invigorated. Throw in some stretches at the end, and you’ve got it all covered.
Working this way is not only efficient, but effective as well to improve your overall fitness level. Every workout doesn’t have to be a combined cardio-strength one; feel free to go for a run or bike ride, spend a session pumping iron or enjoy a yoga class. But CROSS CiRCUIT is a great addition to your regime and incorporates interval training for better results. You’ll benefit big-time with both muscle and fitness!
