stressreducerTips to Slow Down.  With electronics keeping us constantly connected, and a 24/7/365 fast pace, it’s understandable that people often feel overwhelmed and exhausted. Add in the chronic noise level of urban life, radios, music or TVs blaring in virtually every commercial establishment, lawn mowers, snow blowers, leaf blowers, etc., and stress levels can skyrocket.

Even type A personalities who thrive on activity need to slow down periodically for optimal health and wellness. Trouble is, many of us aren’t very good at it, or are waiting for a natural (but highly unlikely) break in the commotion to relax. We need to get deliberate about making time to relax a little each day.

Here is a few stress reducers that can help recharge your mental and physical health:

  1. Turn off your phone, tablet, laptop and any other devices – even for just 30-60 minutes. Take a break from them and do something else – like read a book, take a walk, play with your kids or exercise.
  2. In the car, turn off the radio. Learn to enjoy the silence and collect your thoughts.
  3. At home, pick one night a week to eliminate the TV. Instead, play soft music, catch up on reading, play a game with your family or have a friend over.
  4. Pray regularly or take up meditation. Turn your attention inward – even if only for a short time – and tune out the external environment.
  5. Take a leisurely shower or a warm bubble bath. Light some candles and focus on taking slow, deep breaths that fill up your lunges as you inhale energy and exhale tension.
  6. Practice yoga, perform regular stretches or get a massage. Get in tune with your body, enhance flexibility and ease tight muscles.

Of course, getting enough sleep is the foundation of health, so be sure to hit the sack at a decent hour and give your body the rest it needs.
