What is a hip number?
Your HIP number is the distance from your hip socket joint through your knee to your heel.
Research conducted on behalf of Octane Fitness has found that the distance from your hip socket joint through your knee to your heel is the most precise measurement to determine an appropriate stride length. We call this measurement your Hip Indexing Pivot (HIP) number.
Can I update my existing machine with a new x or xi console?
No, older model Q37 and Q47 ellipticals cannot be updated with x or xi consoles. Unfortunately the new console types are not compatible.
How is distance calculated on Octane Fitness ellipticals?
The distance is calculated by using a formula that incorporates RPM (speed) and stride length. A point of reference for Octane machines is that averaging between 50-60 RPMs will equate to roughly an 8-minute mile.
The Octane Fitness formula also accounts for a “glide factor.” During jogging or running, there is a moment when both feet are in the air and the person is traveling distance. This “glide factor” translates into further distance than what your leg’s stride would be. The “glide factor” is incorporated into the calculation as well. This is an industry standard with elliptical cross trainers; however, each manufacturer may incorporate the “glide factor” differently.
Should my heel rise off the pedals while I’m riding the Octane Fitness elliptical?
Yes, this is normal. Like walking, lifting your heels off the pedals is a natural motion. Two things determine how much your foot comes off the pedal; body position and pedal articulation. With body position the more you lean forward the more your foot comes off the pedal. Pedal articulation, or how much the pedal pivots, will be impacted as the pedal follows your foot’s movement. It is natural for the heel to rise faster than the toe when going forward.
Why do my feet/toes go numb while working out?
This is related to your foot position and may be elevated by making minor adjustments to your body positioning on the elliptical.
Try the following to prevent feet/toes from numbing:
- Position your feet on different areas on the foot pedal.
- Minimize leaning forward too much.
- Try maintaining an upright posture so blood is able to flow down to your feet.
How do I get into the “HILLS” mode in the goal programs on my Q37ci/Q47ci?
Both the 10K and 1/2 Marathon distance goal programs include the “Hills” profile option. To select “Hills”, follow these steps when programming your workout:
- When prompted “FLAT OR HILLS”, press the up or down arrow key twice.
- When “HILLS” is displayed, press Enter.
How do I turn off my elliptical?
If you have a new (2014) Q35, Q37 or Q47 you may power off your elliptical using the power button on the console.
If you have an older model Octane Fitness elliptical the elliptical does not power completely off. However, you can put your elliptical into a sleep mode, which is a virtual “off” that requires very little power. Follow these steps to put elliptical in sleep mode:
- Press and hold the Pause/Clear button until you hear a beep. The matrix display reads “UNFUELING”, and just one LED in the X-mode window remains lit.
- To “wake” your elliptical, simply press any button or begin pedaling.
Activating Movement Management (MOM) Mode
First, check to see that MOM mode is enabled by following these steps:
- Enter User Set-up by pressing and holding the Level +/- keys for three seconds.
- Press any +/- key until “MOM” displays in the matrix window.
- Press Enter until “On” is displayed.
- Press any +/- key until “EXIT” displays in the matrix window, then press Enter.
To activate Mom Mode, press and hold the Program +/- keys for three seconds to activate MOM mode.
How do I save my favorite settings to My QuickStart?
To program your favorite settings for the My QuickStart button follow these steps:
- Enter all of your information as usual – program, time, level, age and weight.
- Press and hold My QuickStart 1 (or My QuickStart 2) button until you hear the console beep, indicating that the profile has been saved.
- If you decide during your workout to change what you have saved, enter the changes on the console.
- If you want to save these new settings, just press and hold My QuickStart again for three seconds or until you hear the beep. This resets your saved profile using the new attributes.
You can use My QuickStart 1 and My QuickStart 2 to save two different workouts. Save the first one according to the directions above, then press Pause/Clear and follow the steps again to save the second workout using the other My QuickStart button.
Heart rate reading seems inaccurate (too low/high)
You may be getting interference with another device in the environment, or you may have a faulty or discharged battery in chest strap.
Try the following and see if heart rate reading returns to normal/expected rates:
- Replace the battery in the chest strap (if it is the style of strap where you can do this; some batteries are ‘built-in’).
- Check the area and remove any devices that might be interfering, such as wireless phones, remote controls, or other exercise equipment with wireless heart rate capability.
- If you are using the digital contact grips, make sure you are grasping the grips firmly and keeping your hands steady and in place.
Also, some individuals have a body chemistry that is not fully compatible with heart rate telemetry. Try the chest strap on another person to see if they are able to get a reading.
Where do I find the serial number on my machine?
Each Octane Fitness elliptical has two serial numbers; one on the base and one on the console.
On standing ellipticals (Q35/Q37/Q4/Q47):
- The base serial number is located below the right chrome rail next to where the power supply plugs in to the machine.
- The console serial number on gray Q35, Q37 or Q47 is located on the bottom edge of the upper console (just above the keypad).
- The console serial number on black Q35 or Q45 is located on the underside of the console.
On xR3/xR4 seated ellipticals:

What parts can I remove to make it easier to move my elliptical?

Remove the pedals on a standing elliptical to reduce the length.
Remove the top cover and then remove the console mast on a standing elliptical to reduce height.
