"I am a big believer in cross training for my team.  I have seen first hand the negative impact too much running can have on a runner - whether a casual or elite runner.  My athletes have used different forms of cross training for years with great success.  The Zero Runner replicates a running motion better than any cross training device I have seen.  Run specific cross training greatly improves my athletes ability to stay healthy and compete."

"The Zero Runner has become a fun and helpful addition to my training. By mostly off-road running and supplementing with Zero Runner sessions, my foot and the rest of my body stay healthy. In fact, I have found the added benefit of the Zero Running is to actually mobilize my ankle and strengthen my running mechanics. Its action is probably as close to running as you can get."

"The Zero Runner is an amazing tool for runners.  Whether you are coming back from an injury, or wanting to add cardiovascular fitness without pounding your legs, it is the perfect workout to complement running.  I have tried endless different types of exercise equipment over the years, but the Zero Runner is the closest to actual running that I have ever experienced.  It is now a part of my routine and it is helping me get stronger and faster without adding unnecessary stress to my legs."

Kara Goucher

Two-Time Olympian • Mom • National Running Champion
“I recommend the Zero Runner to the runners I coach to maximize their training effort. It’s the perfect option for the latter stages of a long run when a runner’s form has diminished and they are at greater risk of injury. It’s also ideal for postrace recovery workouts, allowing for quicker recovery without risk of injury”

Rick Muhr

Coach of Marathon Coalition Club
“The Zero Runner lets me train harder without injury. I use it for recovery runs and for extra cardio when my legs are fatigued from the impact of running. Without the impact that causes fatigue and compromises to proper running form, the Zero Runner helps make every run a great one.”

The fitness market has responded to demand from a population of people past their competitive primes. More products are popping up to help older or oft-injured athletes make workouts more comfortable, safer—or simply more fun.  The Wall Street Journal conducted an unscientific poll of older and injured athletes, specialty stores and fitness professionals to select a handful of popular or promising exercise products for this crowd. Athletes say the tools help alleviate the aches and pains of exercise that commonly start as early as their late 30s.

The Zero Runner, a machine that made its debut this year, has extra joints that allow knees and hips to bend more than they might on elliptical machines. Those joints allow the machine to feel less like an elliptical and more like running down the road.  Tom Riggs is a 56-year-old artist and longtime marathoner in Fort Collins, Colo., whose numerous surgeries prompted doctors to advise him to quit running. He gave it up in April, but a few months ago bought a Zero Runner. “It’s as close to the actual running motion as I’ve ever gotten,” Mr. Riggs says. He runs 40 to 50 miles a week on the machine—about what he had been doing on the ground, he says.
The Zero Runner isn’t motorized, so it is “virtually silent,” says Tim Porth, co-founder of Octane Fitness, which makes it. He aims to develop a version of the machine for health clubs and rehabilitation facilities. But he also bills it as a way for younger runners to minimize pounding on their bodies.

The Zero Runner is relatively new and thus not tested by the masses, and it comes with a $3,299 price tag.  It is available on the company website and at specialty fitness retailers.

My wife surprised me and ordered me a Zero Runner for Father's Day.  I was excited and very surprised.  She went and picked it up in Aurora at 2nd Wind Exercise.  I put it together yesterday and used it today.  I wasn't sure ahead of time how far I was gonna go; my body felt great no pain in my knee (and still have no pain) so I kept going.  13.1 was what I did for my inaugural Zero Runner workout.  13.1 in 1:41 - I was tickled.  I know after one session with the Zero Runner it's going to make me a better runner.

Brian Atherton

Consumer home elliptical machine review of the Zero Runner.
I just got off my in-home Octane elliptical and I am rejoicing with my personal best: 65 minutes, 10.1 miles and 672 calories. This thing is incredible! I have lost 88 pounds since having my son in March 2010. I can credit my beloved Octane Fitness elliptical machine for 60 of those pounds and a healthy diet for the remainder. I feel great, energized and happier then I have felt in years mostly due to this wonderful elliptical. Thank you Octane!

Anne Marggraf

Consumer home elliptical machine review.
I just wanted to let you know how much our family is enjoying our new Octane Q37 elliptical. Jack, 7 years-old, likes that he can measure how fast he can run. Ruthie, our 8 year-old, thinks it's a pretty good workout and likes to "move" for about 3 Disney Channel shows. She seems to think she is moving at 30 mph, but we all know otherwise :) Hannah, 11 years-old thinks the screen is great. She likes that the screen "shows everything all the time." Our tired, old treadmill cycled through the time/distance/calories. Apparently, that really bothered her. We appreciate the fact that the kids can be safely exercising in our home during our long, cold winters. As for Brian, my husband, and I, we like the quiet, smooth glide. We love the various workout options that we are able to adjust to our daily, individual needs. As you can see, our whole family is benefitting from having our new Octane Q37 elliptical machine.

Charise Schutz

Consumer home elliptical machine review of the Q37.
I own the Q47ci and I must say this is the best piece of equipment I have ever had. I'm very hard to please, however this equipment and the service has far exceeded my expectations. It's worth every dollar and more. If you're serious about staying in shape and actually wanting to have fun while acheiving your goals, this piece of equipment is the ticket. I actually look forward to getting on this elliptical. It has so many programs and the added XMode, Arm Blaster, SmartStride and CROSS CiRCUIT features have made this an elite product that I never get bored with. I'm sold on Octane products.

Steven Capraio

Consumer home elliptical machine review of the Q47.
It seems they just added a row of your elliptical machines to the Lifetime Fitness in Arlington Heights I go to on a daily basis. I was eager to rave about how much I loved using your machines for the first time this weekend. I’ve never used another elliptical that was so soft on my feet and knees—I wasn't even sure if I could call this an elliptical because it was so unlike anything else I’ve ever used! I was amazed at how comfortable I felt during my cardio routine that it improved my speed and duration. Details like the level adjustment button on the thumb position of the hand rail and a tracking screen to visually see how many laps I’ve completed made working out a no brainer (which is great because I hate thinking about my workouts). My friend, who was working out next to me, thought the same and actually reached over to yank out my headphones to tell me there was a three level fan attached to the machine as well! Needless to say, you now have two new brand advocates for Octane and I will definitely be spreading the word about your product.

Vanessa Priebe

Consumer home elliptical machine review.
My wife and I purchased an Octane Q47e this past January from G&G Fitness here in upstate NY. I've wanted to add an elliptical trainer to my home gym for quite a while. I had a personal training business in the 90's, so quality, smoothness, and durability were always important features when selecting cardio machines such as a treadmill and stationary bike, as well as resistance training equipment (all of which are still keeping us healthy). After taking a ride on some of the other major competitors, we chose the Octane. Why? Quiet, club-like smoothness, a comparatively small footprint, and a wealth of electronic motivational tools to make exercise just plain fun.

To the point, when doing cardio on the treadmill or stationary bike during the long winter months here, after about 30 min I just plain got bored (kinda felt like a gerbil going nowhere fast). Exercising on the Octane, I found 30 min to fly by, mainly because of the ability to mix in a number of upper and lower body exercises. Finally, the SmartStride auto adjust stride length is a must; based on your HIP number it accurately adjusts stride length from a walking, to jogging, and finally a running stride. No more choppy striding as I have encountered in the past with other gym ellipticals. We're looking forward to a healthy and long relationship with our Octane elliptical!

Bill & Annette

Consumer home elliptical machine review of the Q47.
I just wanted to say that my wife and I bought a Q37 two years ago, and it was a great investment. We haven't had any problem with the machine, its like its still brand new and we use it all the time. These machines hold up great, while other machines break down and wear out. I see why our fitness dealer called to ask if we wanted to trade it in on the new model. The resale value must be quite good on such an awesome machine. Keep up the good work.

Eric Ben

Consumer home elliptical machine review of the Q37.
Once again Octane has illustrated that they are second to none in their customer care and unsurpassed continued support! I have never been associated with a product and a company that is so quick to help and provide follow-through that is unprecedented in today’s sell it/forget it world! I could never even remotely give thought to any other exercise product other than Octane what with all they've done for me! Once again, I'm eternally grateful.

Shannon & Steve

Consumer home elliptical machine review.
I've had my Q47ce for just under a year now and simply couldn't be happier. I use it between 4-6 times per week for a minimum of 30 minutes (alternating between Arm Blaster, X-Mode, and others). I have lost more than 25lbs and have significantly increased both strength and endurance with this machine. In short, I absolutely love it and can't stand when I travel and am forced to use other ellipticals (this machine really spoils you!) As for customer service—it's simply outstanding. I just got off the phone with a customer service rep regarding a minor issue and he got my info and is taking care of the problem—no further questions asked! If you're thinking about getting an elliptical exerciser, you simply can't do any better for yourself than to get one of these machines. The only real problem I've had since buying is that I only have one of them and since my wife loves using it as much as I do, we frequently end up competing for who gets to use it first! Thanks for building such an excellent, high quality machine Octane. I'm a customer for life!

This is by far the best home elliptical; great stride length, durability and smooth flow. You got my vote and I only purchased three days ago from Gym Source in Paramus, NJ. Thanks.

At my age, movement in my legs and flexibility are important to me. I’ve had four hip replacements – both hips two times. I exercise every day, and when I got on the Octane xRide I could immediately feel the difference. The ability to go forward and backward is great, and the upper-body motion really helps my shoulders, especially because I have a torn rotator cuff. The xRide is one heck of a workout, and after using it, I can hit the golf ball again. This is the best piece of fitness equipment I have used – it is first-rate.

I travel extensively and have "had the opportunity" to train on lots of different cardio equipment. After trying so many options, I was all set to buy a Life Fitness elliptical. I went to Fitness Resource and tried it out with my wife and I saw this weird looking elliptical next to it and kind of blew it off. My wife jumped on it (turns out it was an Octane) and said that it was much better. My mind was made up and I wanted the Life Fitness. We went home to talk about it and my wife was set on the Octane. I caved and now I am so happy I did. The first 2-3 workouts were really different but by the 4th one I was hooked. A week later I headed out for the usual grind on the road and I had to use a Precor one day and a Life Fitness the next. I could not believe the difference. I recently had to use a True system and could not even complete the workout. The stride on the Octane elliptical is so natural and the workouts are so much more consistent. I LOVE IT! Thanks!

Five years ago I sat down at a blood pressure tester at a local grocery store. I was 36 and thought I was invincible. I was 196 pounds and found I had borderline hypertension. As I like my life, I decided that I might want to stick around for a while. I decided to lose the pounds and get in shape. Over the next 5 years I did just that. I have lost 53 pounds and kept it off. I went from size 38-40 pants to size 29 pants. I never dieted because I always ate healthy food—just too much of it for my exercise level. My blood pressure is great and so is my heart rate. At 41, I am in the best shape of my life and I bet I could beat many of the 18 year-olds out there in a race. In the beginning I had a Lifecycle, but then found the Octane elliptical trainer. Each day I leave my office and come home for an hour and a half of cardio exercise on the Octane. My workout is very vigorous and I maintain a heart rate of 150-165 during my workout. Maintaining this level of fitness and weight would not have been possible without the Octane elliptical trainer. In my profession the stress is high and workload is heavy. I see my fitness and health maintenance as a part of my ethical duty to my clients to represent them well. If your lawyer is not healthy then he is not thinking or working at the top of his game. Thus, I see taking time to care for myself as crucial to the effective practice of law. I love the Octane and when I am out of town and use hotel equipment it is just not the same. The Octane has a perfect balance for posture during a long workout. It balances my efforts over my entire body and I will never give it up. The results I have achieved with the Octane have now encouraged me to participate in the President's Challenge and to log my workout time each day. I am almost at my bronze award after one month of participation, and my activity places me in the 99th percentile of individuals nationwide participating in the program which shows how effective the Octane elliptical is. I am grateful to Octane Fitness for this piece of hardy equipment. It makes working out enjoyable and it is easy to become a fanatic with it. I also owe thanks to Octane because as I have become more fit, my law practice has benefited from my energy, and so has my family. With a 2 year old son and a wife, I want to stay healthy for a long, long life. Although we cannot eliminate all health risks in life, staying active and protecting our fitness is something we control. The Octane elliptical is the best investment I have ever made—and it has never become a clothes rack.

I really cannot say enough wonderful things about Octane's equipment. I have been using an elliptical at my gym for years now, but this one is the best I have ever been on. It is so sturdy, and the ride is so smooth and quiet. There are so many different programs that you could do a different workout everyday for a month. I also love, love, love the fact that you can target specific body parts, such as the glutes! My favorite feature is the chest strap that monitors your heart rate. I didn't realize how I naturally slow myself down often times during my workout until I had that monitor constantly telling me to keep up the pace. I would recommend this machine to anyone because it offers a wide variety of levels to introduce people to exercise as well as to challenge people with advanced fitness. This has been a pivotal part of my program.

I have suffered from "bad knees" for many years and it is to the point that knee replacement is likely. It is that "catch 22" in that without exercise my weight increased causing more pain and greater restricted mobility, but if I did exercise I suffered even greater pain and inflammation of the knees and in turn restricted mobility. That was until I purchased your Q47! I have not been able to perform such rigorous exercise in more than 15 years without suffering intense pain. I admit to hesitating when I was told the purchase price, but now, well how much money is it worth to be able to exercise rigorously and not suffer intense pain? The answer is a whole lot! Additionally, I suffered injury to one foot (unrelated to use of the Q47) and had to have reconstructive surgery. I was off that foot for two months, but have now worked my way back to the level of use on the Q47 I was at prior to the surgery. I was reminded of how I can exercise rigorously and not suffer the pain in my knees and just had to write! Thank you for the efforts in research and development that lead to this machine! Oh and yes I've used other ellipticals and there is no comparison.

When my husband and I decided to finish our basement and add a gym area, we came to a roadblock in our plans when it came to purchasing cardio equipment. He is 6' 4" and I’m 5' 3" tall. Additionally, the ceiling height was just over 7’. I hit the internet to see if there was anything that could suit our varied needs. Much to my surprise, we found it in the Q47ce. The low step height and variable stride was just what we needed. We’ve had it a year now, and we still use it faithfully. After so many years of crowded gyms, waiting for equipment and dealing with annoying people on their cell phones; we have found commercial-quality equipment for our home.

This is a great product for people who have weak, chronic back problems. I had a treadmill and could not run and felt beat up after walking on it. With this elliptical I can run as fast as I can with no back pain afterwards! I wish I would have gotten this earlier. The long stride option was the deciding factor on why I bought this particular machine.... we looked long and hard and I tell you this is a great machine to purchase—I can run again! Thanks Octane for making the long stride option.

I am 43 years old, reasonably fit, and have been using a competitor's elliptical machine for several years at a local health club. I finally decided to build a home gym and purchased the Q47ce (after trying the competitor's home version at the fitness store). All I can say is that this system is incredible—what a well built machine! I have degrees in both physics and engineering and one of the first things I did was to remove all the covers to study the internal workings of my new toy. All I can say is how impressed I was with the overall simplicity of the design/construction and overall quality of the components used. Additionally, my first few workouts on this machine have been nothing short of amazing! I can't believe how nice it's been to use so many different types of programs that target specific muscle groups. I look forward to many years of complete satisfaction with this system and highly recommend it! I'm so thankful I purchased this system versus the brand I'd been using in the past. Thanks Octane for putting together such a nice machine.

I am a healthy 55 year old woman but last spring I fell on the cement and broke my kneecap in half. After emergency surgery and 3 months in a full leg brace, I was completely out of shape and had gained some unwanted pounds. At that time I started physiotherapy. It was slow going but eventually I started using the Octane elliptical at physio. It was hard work but did not impact my healing knee like the treadmill I had been using. After 4 months of physio I was given exercises for home and continued exercising. But I couldn't go fast enough on my treadmill to work up a sweat without my knee hurting from the impact. So I bit the bullet yesterday and bought the Octane Q37 elliptical and just finished my second workout. I feel great. I worked up a good sweat, and when I got off I walked like I couldn't after using the treadmill. Definitely the best exercise equipment for my circumstances and now I found out, it is what my daughters use at the gym. Thanks for helping me heal and get back into shape!

As a pure elliptical, Octanes are among the best, extremely smooth and solid. The new LateralX (LX8000) adds interesting variety to elliptical workouts that challenges muscles in new ways -- a classic "muscle confusion" strategy that works to increase all-round fitness.

I purchased the Q47ce to help get back into shape and I can't believe how great it is to use. I own a treadmill and get very bored on it quickly. Thus making it hard to stick to my workouts. But the Q47ce offers so many exercises that I constantly change my routine and look forward to using it. I get a great full body workout and enjoy doing it! I would recommend anyone who is too busy to get to the gym to try the Octane elliptical. You won't be sorry.

I purchased the new seated elliptical, xR6e from 2ndwind Fitness last October and love it. Having had both knees replaced seven months ago, even walking can sometimes be difficult with the weather and all so a treadmill is out. The “xRide” is perfect!! Since I can sit, it gives me aerobic/cardio exercise without the strain on my knees and I’m not experiencing stress on my back either. The Leg Press and Chest Press settings add variety and upper body toning. I experimented with the Muscle Endurance settings. I do a half hour in the morning, and another half hour in the afternoon. I feel great after I finish. I’m 72, and overweigh. This machine is the answer for anyone wanting to improve their health with low-impact cardio/fat-burning exercise. It is worth every penny. The people at the Sheboygan store were very helpful in showing me how to program the unit.

I am a registered nurse who works the 7pm-7am shift at the hospital. I have put on a lot of weight between finishing nursing school and working nights with nothing but junk food to eat . I decided to purchase the Octane Q35 after trying it out at Fitness Lifestyles in Asbury Park, NJ. It is WONDERFUL! It is easy on the joints and quiet. I have it in my bedroom and my husband, who hears everything in his sleep, did not known that I was working out on the elliptical. It's that nice!

I’m not one to gush much—especially about exercising—BUT, I purchased the new xR6ce seated elliptical from Octane Fitness a couple of months ago at the Chantilly Fitness Resource and I LOVE IT! Having had both knees replaced within the past five years, I can’t run. Even walking can sometimes be difficult—so a treadmill is out. I can do a bike (and we have a good one at home) but that can get boring. The xRide is perfect. Since I can sit, it gives me aerobic/cardio exercise without the strain on my knees and I’m not experiencing stress on my back either. The Leg Press and Chest Press settings add variety and upper body toning. Last night I experimented with the Muscle Endurance setting and because of the variety and timing I was intrigued the whole time I was working out. My half hour was over before I even knew it and I felt great when I was done! I’m 61, overweight, diabetic and have arthritis and other issues. This machine is the answer for anyone wanting to improve their health with low-impact cardio and fat-burning exercise, PLUS muscle usage and toning. It is worth every penny!

I am 57 years old, recently retired and, until January 1st of this year,  smoked a pack and a half of cigarettes a day, having been a smoker for 40+ years. Once I quit, I knew I needed to start working out. After much research and prodding by my wife (she quit smoking also), I purchased an Octane Q37ce. Best $3,000 I have ever spent! When I first got on, I could only manage 5-10 minutes at a very easy pace. We had our Octane delivered April 12th and after a slow start, I now do a 45 minute cardio workout every morning. I feel great when I'm done and I've only scratched the surface of what is available. I started out to lose weight after I gained 30 pounds due to quitting smoking. I have lost about 15 pounds so far, but the biggest benefit is my breathing is improving. After all those years of smoking, there wasn't much I could do without getting winded. The info I get from the screen is invaluable as it helps me to set the bar a little higher once I get in a comfort zone. Thank you Octane for helping to Fuel my health.

In January 2005 I purchased an Octane Q45e. I shopped for a long time before I decided on this machine. I was looking for a quality elliptical from a company that would stand behind their product if there were any problems. I love this machine and use it every day. It provides a great workout for both my husband and myself. As with anything electronic, there have been a few bugs but Octane has worked with me to fix them, even beyond the warranty period. I recommend Octane to anyone looking for a good quality elliptical and a reputable company to buy from.

I certainly agree 110% with the Best Buy Rating of this elliptical, but to me it is more than just the awards Octane has accumulated. No product is perfect and I can attest that Octane Fitness owners, management and distributors stand behind their product 110%. I purchased a Q45e a year and a half ago and I was that one percent that got a machine that was sub-par. I have been impressed with the support that Octane took upon themselves to go above and beyond to correct my machine. So to me, Octane has without question proven to me that they not only produce the best elliptical on the market but are THE BEST COMPANY producing them. My wife and I would personally like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

My wife and I just purchased your Q35 for our home gym. We can honestly tell you that it is truly amazing to use. The machine is so solid and smooth. You just hop on and you never want to stop. I have worked out myself for over 20 years and have worked in health clubs for close to 15 years. I have no problem comparing this machine to others that cost over 3x as much. How about making a recumbent bike? Keep up the good work helping make America strong and healthy!

Consumer home elliptical machine review of Q35.
I had been a runner for about 30 years and eventually the roadwork and availability of time took its toll on me. I had relegated myself to only being able to run on weekends as I was too busy commuting to and from the office to run, plus my aching joints were beginning to be a problem. In November 2005 I decided to try and get back into shape. I looked at and tested various machines and was talked into splurging on the Q45e. In addition to beginning to exercise, I joined Weight Watchers and in 8 months of diet and exercise lost 55 pounds. I hit the machine religiously every night, even if only for 15 minutes. I'm back to a much more liberal diet, but the exercise continues to allow me to maintain the weight loss after another 8 months. I am an engineer so appreciate the solid quality and durability of the machine and have recommended it to friends and associates. I have used lesser machines when I travel, but they just don't measure up. While the price tag was high, so is the cost of health care. I am pleased with the machine and hope to use it for many years. Thank you.

I purchased the new Q37 and I must say that this is the best workout machine I have ever been on. It is incredible! I love the X-Mode which changes to different modes all throughout the workout and it never is the same. It's like a built-in personal trainer. The machine is also one of the best built machines I have ever seen. Great job!

Because I suffer from deteriorating disks, my doctor insisted that I give up running. For nearly three months, I've been unable to workout. Exercising on a treadmill bothered my back. I purchased an Octane elliptical and am thrilled with it. I had tried out other brands of ellipticals, but none compare with Octane's comfortable feel. Since I'm only 5 feet tall, getting a proper fit with exercise equipment can be a challenge. Octane works perfectly for both myself and my 6' 2" son.

I thought I was in good shape until I tried the Octane machine. It made me realize the other ellipticals at the gym really weren't doing much for me. After I get done with a workout on the Q35e, I really feel like I accomplished something—and I can really feel the burn!

I have owned my Octane elliptical for approximately eight months and feel the unit is great. After several weeks of using the device, I found my workouts on other equipment also improved. We recently had the opportunity to take a cruise and discovered the fitness center was equiped with one of your primary competitor's products. It only took me one or two minutes to decide the short range of motion and smaller wheels under the foot pads made this more expensive unit very undesirable to use. You met the competition head on and won the contest hands done. Keep up the great work.

I call this my dream machine. I went from a size 16 to a size 7/8 using the Octane elliptical on manual mode, without even using the bells and whistles! I tried out almost every elliptical on the market before purchasing the Octane. I like the stride of this machine and prefer it over the Precor ramp model. It also allows you to squat and work your glutes if you are so inclined. When I bought the Octane I had severe knee pain from trying to jog, and I had no problems at all with my knees after using this machine. The Octane is worth every dime and more.

I cannot thank you enough for the unbelievable support I received from you and Octane. Needless to say, you went far and above the call of duty to take care of my out-of-warranty and dealer issue. As the owner of one small business and the Manager of another, I am very attuned to good customer service. I have always felt I delivered the best service in my businesses. However, you have given me a run for my money! I have one friend who just bought 2 Q47e ellipticals so your efforts are already paying off. Further, I am selling my Q45e to upgrade to the Q47e. You have a customer and unsolicited salesperson for life! I could not be happier. Kudos to you. Long live Octane Fitness.

I searched for months to try an elliptical I could use. As an above knee amputee I could not find a machine that had a stride that would let me use it. Most especially the cheaper models stride was too vertical. I finally gave up and decided to get an exercise bike. When I went into a fitness store to get a bike my wife saw the Octane Q35e and tried it and said I should try it as well. I tried it and it was exactly what I was looking for. Very smooth, quiet and, most important, the stride fit the capabilities of my artificial leg. Since purchasing it Octane's customer support has helped me to make some adjustments to even make it easier. An excellent company to work with and very consumer oriented.

I’m a former 10 mile a day runner. At that level of output, I was destined to break down and I eventually did. I could no longer run and I looked for years for a substitute. While I can now work out on and elliptical, I still desire to work out for at least an hour per day. My flat feet wouldn’t even allow me to work out on a conventional weight bearing elliptical for an hour. A trainer recommended your xR6 seated elliptical. What an amazing machine! I can workout for 90 minutes if I desire with no pain from impact. Additionally, I get a great upper body workout. My weight is rapidly dropping down to my 60- to 70-mile a week body weight. However, now I have a far stronger upper body and no nagging aches and pains that go along with running such long distances. Thanks for inventing this machine!

To reiterate–the Octane Pro4700 is the finest machine of its kind. I have tried virtually all of the other options and nothing comes close. I could not be more pleased with our recent purchase and will recommend it to other board members who are planning to upgrade their fitness facilities. Octane Fitness makes great machines for both the gym and home. I love their ellipticals because they’re smooth, comfortable on joints and easy to use. The MultiGrip handlebars let you work different muscles and it has a personal trainer–X-Mode–built in to work your entire body.

The Octane elliptical is the ideal exercise product for couples, families or athletes. Everyone's got a different stride and you want this to work especially for you. So you can actually adjust the stride and customize to address your unique needs. I love the MultiGrip handlebars that are so comfortable I can get a real total-body experience. But the bottom line is that I can burn more calories in less time than if I used other equipment. If being too time-starved to get in a workout is the problem, then the Octane elliptical is the solution.

We wanted to take a minute to tell you how happy we are with the Octane Fitness elliptical. We have the Q37e, and it is simply the BEST elliptical trainer that we have ever tried! We travel all over the world, so we have exercised in hundreds of health clubs, and therefore we have tried dozens of brands of elliptical trainers. We can say without question that the Octane Fitness elliptical is the most effective workout we have ever had on this type of machine. The action is smooth, without any unnecessary bouncing. We love the XMode which functions like having a personal trainer right by our sides when we work out. The XMode gives a little variety to the workout, so that the training session does not become monotonous. We absolutely love the Octane Fitness Q37e and would be happy to recommend it to any discerning fitness enthusiast. You don't see many elliptical cross trainers designed as smart as these from Octane. It's clear that they did their homework—studying how the body moves naturally, then adding arm motion so everything is working together in a biomechanically correct manner. Ergonomically, it doesn't get much better than this—from the stride length, the close pedal spacing, the pedal articulation, and the smooth, fluid motion. Plus, unique programs like the X-Mode and the GluteKicker encourage cross training so you can keep getting results.

Ellipticals are one of the hottest products in our clubs. The main reason is our members can get a great cardiovascular workout without experiencing the joint-related pounding forces of some other forms of exercise. The result is members can exercise more frequently, in large part due to the reduced musculoskeletal jarring forces of elliptical exercisers.

We have put the Octane product through our stringent Rand D process and they have grown from a newcomer to being the elliptical category leader in our clubs. We are very particular with the equipment we bring into our clubs and Octane is the winner according to members, trainers and our service techs. Service is truly what makes Octane rise above the competition, they have the best service record in the industry, even though it is rarely needed, but when a problem does arise they are there to fix the problem so we have minimal down time.

Treadmill testing at Runner's World headquarters is underway, with a wide range of machines being put through the paces for possible review in the November 2014 issue of the magazine.

One of the machines we're looking at, the Zero Runner by Octane Fitness, isn't actually a treadmill at all—think of it like a mashup of an elliptical, bicycle, and treadmill. It provides a close approximation of running without the impacts you get from landing on a solid surface. There is a bit of a learning curve to it, however, so a group of editors met with Tim Porth, the company's head of product development and marketing, to get our legs under us.

Boston Marathon

Testimonials from the launch of the Zero Runner at the 2014 Boston Marathon.
The non-motorized elliptical-looking apparatus with individual foot pads allows you to accurately replicate a real running motion with no impact. It has greater stride length/range of motion than an elliptical and less impact than a treadmill.

The most realistic running motion of any non-treadmill I've tried. While you can make a variety of movements, from an elliptical-like oval glide and an up-and-down stair step, the Zero lets you flow into a real running gait. That is due to a design that mimics the leg by placing pivot points at the knee and hips, and it includes a foot platform that can flex like an ankle.

That allows you to flick your heel back and almost kick your own butt. Combined with the large potential stride length (I was hitting 50 inches at 6:48 miles, double the length of the best ellipticals), it feels very real. My heart rate, as expected, was a little less than on land by about 10 beats per minute, which actually encouraged me to go at a faster pace (which is displayed on the monitor along with elapsed time and stride length).

Having a problematic right knee, the complete lack of impact was a dream for me. I could see runners using this to do a significant chunk (20% to 30%) of their training, thereby saving wear and tear on the joints without losing any conditioning. In that sense, it's like water running but more technique-specific. Plugless, self-powered, it is dead silent. It will be available in Busybody and other fitness stores Aug. 1.

Los Angeles Times

Zero Runner featured in the LA Times article about machines that aim to be runner's hurt blocker.
A couple of months I had been told by my doctors that running was no longer something my body could tolerate. I had promised my wife if I was ever told by a doctor to stop running, I would. I never really thought that day would come, but since it has, I have to keep that promise.

Today I’m happy to tell you that I am now running again, but I haven’t broken the promise I made to my wife!

How is that possible? A couple of weeks ago I got a message from my friend Tonja at Health Styles Exercise Equipment. She wanted to thank me for sending folks her way when they would ask me about my ElliptiGO (which is now sold by Performance Bicycles). But she also wanted to tell me about a new piece of equipment from Octane Fitness called the “Zero Runner.” The Zero Runner basically suspends the “runner” in air on foot pads and has hip and knee joints that allow the runner to replicate a natural, fluid running motion without the impact of running on a traditional treadmill. It’s a weight-bearing exercise without impact, and since the impact is the thing my doctors want me to avoid, the Zero Runner is perfect for me.

Tonja called me as soon as a Zero Runner was on-site and available for me to try out. I headed out with the Lovely Linda (my wife of 32 years) and we both gave it a try. I was hooked right away and, to my surprise, so was Linda! But this is no cheap toy, and at a dollar shy of $3,300, it’s a serious investment not to be taken lightly. Surprising me a second time that day, Linda was as interested in hearing more about the Zero Runner as I was. We took delivery last Wednesday.

One of my favorite features of the Zero Runner is that it’s human powered. Instead of a motor setting the pace for you to keep up with, you are the sole motivator and make the machine work via your own muscle strength, as if you were actually on a run. The feel is natural and more instinctive than any treadmill I’ve ever run on, and there is definitely a learning curve. After some initial awkwardness, however, everyone gets the hang of it pretty quickly. It’s got a nifty display with numbers and information that seems to float on a clear piece of glass in front of you. It’s also got handles that move with your legs and keep your arms bent at a perfect-running-form ninety degree angle at waist height. You can also choose to hold on to a pair of fixed handles. I felt the most comfortable doing this, and soon found myself letting go of the right handle, my arm immediately settling into a natural swinging motion. It felt awesome! Try one out.

Zero Runner basically allows the runner to replicate a natural, fluid running motion without the impact of running on a traditional treadmill.
After a summer on no use, we got on our Octane Eliptical recently and there was no power. I went to the retailer and we deceided to start simple. Bring in the power cord and see if it worked. Well, It didn't. With the product still under warranty they directed me to the Octane web site. On Oct. 6 I ordered a cord. Sounds simple, and to my surprise it was. Whereas most manufacturers make you jump through hoops to get any satisfaction, all Octane asked for was the serial number and information about me (name, address, etc.)

Wednesday Oct. 8 the cord arrived. TWO DAYS !! And it works. Now this may sound pretty simple and basic and it is. But it is not common. Most instances of contacting any manufacturer to access warranty action is time consuming, frustrating, and usually ends with a bad taste. Not with Octane.

The quality of our Octane Eliptical is superb. I don't anticipate having to use the warranty for anything major, but if I do I'm convinced any problem will be handled quickly and to our satisfaction.

Octane Eliptical. Quality product. Quality service. Quality people.

Our History

Octane-Owners

Two passionate industry veterans pursued their entrepreneurial spirit and founded Octane Fitness in 2001, dedicated to focusing solely on elliptical machines and to make the best in the world. With the diligence and drive of Dennis Lee and Tim Porth, Octane’s first elliptical machine sold within 45 minutes of Lee delivering it to a retailer in November 2002.

The company went on to revolutionize the standing elliptical category, with breakthroughs unavailable on any other machines. But that wasn’t enough. Octane then invented the recumbent elliptical category with the launch of the unique xRide in 2008, which provided a new exercise modality that offered greater effectiveness than other seated equipment.

In pursuit of an even better way to exercise, Octane created CROSS CiRCUIT, an efficient, effective program that combines cardio on the elliptical with strength-training intervals next to the elliptical. Exercisers now can benefit even more with more rigorous and productive workouts.

In 2012, Octane made history again with the launch of the innovative LateralX trainer, which combines lateral motion with a stepping motion for the ultimate in functional, total-body challenges.

With the debut of SmartLink in 2013, Octane is led the way for smarter training that drives results and performance. This free app connects to and controls Octane machines; designs customized, goal-based workouts; delivers video-based coaching and CROSS CiRCUIT routines; and tracks all results.

And there’s still more. Committed to crafting a way to run that was easier on the body, the ingenious Octane crew dedicated years on the new Zero Runner, which lets everyone run without impact. The only machine of its kind in the world, the Zero Runner has transformed running and blazed new trails for runners – or anyone who wants to be a runner.

This intense focus and unwavering standards has led to 70 Best Buy awards, multiple new ways to exercise for virtually anyone, hundreds of thousands of fueled exercisers worldwide and a forever evolving and improving workout landscape. Stay tuned for more innovation, courtesy of Octane Fitness.

Research Shows Octane Fitness® Zero Runner® Delivers Equivalent Workouts to Treadmill

June 7, 2016

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. – June 7, 2016A recent university study shows that the Zero Runner by  Octane Fitness, a Nautilus®, Inc. (NYSE:NLS) brand, elicits the same physiological response as treadmills during steady-state aerobic exercise. The data indicates that the Zero Runner offers a comparable workout as running on a treadmill, minus the repetitive impact to the body.

“This study validates what we knew all along based on user feedback – that the Zero Runner can deliver the same workout intensity as treadmills, while eliminating injury-producing impact,” said Tim Porth, vice president, product development and marketing, commercial and specialty at Octane Fitness. “This provides support for runners and exercisers who seek running-specific cross-training alternatives to high-impact routines.”

Conducted in the fall of 2015 by members of the BioKinetics Program at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota, the study was entitled “Examining Effects of High vs. Low-Impact Cardiovascular Machines and their Physiological Metabolic Impact.” College students who were regular exercisers completed two separate 25-minute graded exercise sessions at 60 to 65 percent of their heart rate maximum:  one on a treadmill and one on the Zero Runner. Metabolic response was measured for oxygen consumption, respiratory exchange ratio, volume of carbon dioxide expired and ventilatory equivalents for oxygen.

Results displayed significant equivalence between participants when on the treadmill and Zero Runner across all metabolic variables measured. Researchers concluded, “The Zero Runner has the physiological basis to serve as an appropriate exercise modality to solicit the metabolic adaptations observed during traditional running.” Furthermore, because the Zero Runner is a “self-propelled cardiovascular machine,” it is similar to running outside as well. Finally, “The Zero Runner focuses on proper running form, like full gait strides, heel kicks and striking with the balls of the feet; it has similar muscle recruitment to running outdoors.”

With this information, runners can be confident that Zero Runner workouts are equivalent to running on a treadmill – except for the high-impact that can cause fatigue, compromises in form and injury. The Zero Runner is a viable alternative that helps runners cross train, perform active recovery, eliminate junk miles, reduce risk of injury and extend their running career.

Zero-Impact Running™

Independent hip and knee joints on the Zero Runner replicate natural motion – from walking, jogging, hill work and all-out running with a stride length up to 58 inches – with no impact on the body. Unique stride tracing technology enables users to monitor their stride throughout for stronger form, greater consistency throughout runs and correcting imbalances.

Workout programs include interval training, distance goals and CROSS CiRCUIT®, which combines intervals on the Zero Runner with strength and stretching exercises off the machine for greater overall conditioning.  Octane’s free SmartLink™ app offers training plans including 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon, and the app is compatible with select Garmin smartwatches so that data from both outdoor runs and indoor sessions on the Zero Runner is conveniently tracked to one training log.

The self-powered, quiet Zero Runner is available in two models for home use and one for commercial facilities through specialty fitness retailers and direct sales from Octane Fitness.  For more information, visit www.zerorunner.com.

Octane Fitness Earns 10 Best Buy Awards from Fitness Professor Review

December 15, 2015

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. – Dec. 15, 2015 – Fitness Professor Review bestowed 10 Best Buy awards for the 2015-2016 season to five products from Octane Fitness, LLC, adding to the 29 awards received from the review board in the past five years. Since 2003, Octane has earned more than 90 Best Buy awards from publications, consumer organizations and specialty fitness retailers.

“We greatly appreciate the ongoing recognition from Fit Prof Review, and we continually strive to own the zero-impact cardio exercise category to equip exercisers to fuel their lives,” said Tim Porth, executive vice president of product development and marketing at Octane Fitness.

Fit Prof Review summarized Octane’s position: “Very few brands have impacted the equipment industry as many times as Octane,” noting the company’s revolutionary standing ellipticals, seated elliptical, LateralX elliptical, XT-One cross-trainer, and unprecedented Zero Runner.

For the second time ever, Fit Prof Review named a Best Product of the Year:  Octane’s just launched ZR8, the premium model of the innovative Zero Runner category. This new modality also won the Best Crosstainer under $4500 and Best Treadmill Under $4500, and tied as the Best Elliptical Under $4500.

According to reviewers, “The Zero Runner offers the highest level of freedom of movement ever found on one machine. Add Octane’s world-class construction, motivational software and CROSS CiRCUIT technology, and enhanced aluminum legs and pedal construction, and the ZR8 is the 2016 Product of the Year.”

Equipped with new aircraft-grade aluminum legs and lightweight pedals, the ZR8 facilitates a faster cadence, and a greater resistance range creates challenges, like hill repeats. New performance grips are free-moving to more closely replicate a runner’s arm swing and engage the core.

Octane’s ZR7, which debuted in 2014 and was named the 2015 Fit Prof Review Product of the Year, invented zero-impact running. For the second consecutive year, the ZR7 was named the Best Crosstrainer under $3500 and the Best Elliptical under $4000, and tied for the Best Treadmill under $3500. It was recognized for “its innovative, 58” dynamic stride design; user-defined, zero-impact motion; and the highest level of freedom of movement ever found on one machine.”

In the standing elliptical category, the top-of-the-line Octane Q47xi was named the Best Buy elliptical for the ninth consecutive year, and the Q37x was the Best Elliptical under $3000 for the sixth year in a row. Among the recognized features of these models were “the versatile CROSS CiRCUIT program and great interactive programs.”

One of Octane’s recumbent ellipticals, the xR4 xRide, earned the Best Crosstrainer under $3000 award for the second consecutive year, with reviewers noting: “Hands down one of the very best crosstrainers on the market.” According to Fit Prof Review, “Oversized pedals, 75 different seating positions, plus Octane’s famous software, make the xR4x an incredible option for anyone interested in low impact, crosstraining exercise.”

“The Zero Runner category is all about smarter training – working hard and continually achieving even better results, while protecting your body,” said Tim Porth, the EVP of product development and marketing. “With its new aluminum legs, higher resistance levels and performance grips, the ZR8 is a training tool that equips runners to cross train, perfect their form, improve race times and ultimately extend their running career.”

Premier Features Enhance Running

New aircraft-grade aluminum legs feature lightweight pedals and independent hip and knee joints to customize natural running motion, and now facilitate a faster cadence so runners can work on speed. A greater resistance range creates a heavier workload for various challenges, like hill repeats. New performance grips are free-moving to more closely replicate a runner’s arm swing, and contoured handles feature multiple hand positions for an optimal upright posture.

The machine also includes digital contact and wireless heart rate monitoring, ANT+, Bluetooth® 4.0 for mobile device connectivity and a deluxe console that displays key running stats.

Training smarter is enhanced with SmartLink™, the free app that offers live stride tracing technology that enables runners to monitor and adjust form as necessary to maintain endurance and speed. SmartLink also includes training plans such as 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon for extra guidance and motivation. Downloaded to an iPad®, iPhone® or iPod touch®, SmartLink wirelessly connects to the Zero Runner and tracks speed, distance, heart rate and more from every run so that runners can analyze training and make changes if necessary.

Plus, with the SmartLink app exclusively for select Garmin smartwatches, all data is tracked to one place for both outdoor runs and indoor sessions on the ZR8, creating a convenient, comprehensive training log. Runners also can complete a portion of their training run outside, and finish it indoors on the ZR8, while the app records all data as one workout.

Valuable strength and flexibility training for runners is simple with the CROSS CiRCUIT®, which combines cardio intervals on the Zero Runner with strength and stretching exercises off the machine to address weak links, correct muscular imbalances, build overall strength, boost flexibility and improve core power. Based on a runner’s specified goals, the ZR8 provides a customized regimen to maximize efficiency and results, and video demonstrations and coaching help ensure proper form and execution.

Next Generation

Built with a stronger frame for exceptional performance, the ZR8 offers cordless, virtually silent operation. Available at authorized specialty fitness retailers, the ZR8 has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $4,299. For more information about this unique product, visit www.zerorunner.com.
