General

Product usage, operation, user health, contact, company, etc.

What is a hip number?

Your HIP number is the distance from your hip socket joint through your knee to your heel.

Research conducted on behalf of Octane Fitness has found that the distance from your hip socket joint through your knee to your heel is the most precise measurement to determine an appropriate stride length. We call this measurement your Hip Indexing Pivot (HIP) number.

Can I update my existing machine with a new x or xi console?

No, older model Q37 and Q47 ellipticals cannot be updated with x or xi consoles. Unfortunately the new console types are not compatible.

How is distance calculated on Octane Fitness ellipticals?

The distance is calculated by using a formula that incorporates RPM (speed) and stride length. A point of reference for Octane machines is that averaging between 50-60 RPMs will equate to roughly an 8-minute mile.

The Octane Fitness formula also accounts for a “glide factor.” During jogging or running, there is a moment when both feet are in the air and the person is traveling distance. This “glide factor” translates into further distance than what your leg’s stride would be. The “glide factor” is incorporated into the calculation as well. This is an industry standard with elliptical cross trainers; however, each manufacturer may incorporate the “glide factor” differently.

Should my heel rise off the pedals while I’m riding the Octane Fitness elliptical?

Yes, this is normal. Like walking, lifting your heels off the pedals is a natural motion. Two things determine how much your foot comes off the pedal; body position and pedal articulation. With body position the more you lean forward the more your foot comes off the pedal. Pedal articulation, or how much the pedal pivots, will be impacted as the pedal follows your foot’s movement. It is natural for the heel to rise faster than the toe when going forward.

Why do my feet/toes go numb while working out?

This is related to your foot position and may be elevated by making minor adjustments to your body positioning on the elliptical.

Try the following to prevent feet/toes from numbing:

  • Position your feet on different areas on the foot pedal.
  • Minimize leaning forward too much.
  • Try maintaining an upright posture so blood is able to flow down to your feet.

How do I get into the “HILLS” mode in the goal programs on my Q37ci/Q47ci?

Both the 10K and 1/2 Marathon distance goal programs include the “Hills” profile option.  To select “Hills”, follow these steps when programming your workout:

  • When prompted “FLAT OR HILLS”, press the up or down arrow key twice.
  • When “HILLS” is displayed, press Enter.

How do I turn off my elliptical?

If you have a new (2014) Q35, Q37 or Q47 you may power off your elliptical using the power button on the console.

If you have an older model Octane Fitness elliptical the elliptical does not power completely off. However, you can put your elliptical into a sleep mode, which is a virtual “off” that requires very little power. Follow these steps to put elliptical in sleep mode:

  • Press and hold the Pause/Clear button until you hear a beep. The matrix display reads “UNFUELING”, and just one LED in the X-mode window remains lit.
  • To “wake” your elliptical, simply press any button or begin pedaling.

Activating Movement Management (MOM) Mode

First, check to see that MOM mode is enabled by following these steps:

  1. Enter User Set-up by pressing and holding the Level +/- keys for three seconds.
  2. Press any +/- key until “MOM” displays in the matrix window.
  3. Press Enter until “On” is displayed.
  4. Press any +/- key until “EXIT” displays in the matrix window, then press Enter.

To activate Mom Mode, press and hold the Program +/- keys for three seconds to activate MOM mode.

How do I save my favorite settings to My QuickStart?

To program your favorite settings for the My QuickStart button follow these steps:

  1. Enter all of your information as usual – program, time, level, age and weight.
  2. Press and hold My QuickStart 1 (or My QuickStart 2) button until you hear the console beep, indicating that the profile has been saved.
  3. If you decide during your workout to change what you have saved, enter the changes on the console.
  4. If you want to save these new settings, just press and hold My QuickStart again for three seconds or until you hear the beep. This resets your saved profile using the new attributes.

You can use My QuickStart 1 and My QuickStart 2 to save two different workouts. Save the first one according to the directions above, then press Pause/Clear and follow the steps again to save the second workout using the other My QuickStart button.

Heart rate reading seems inaccurate (too low/high)

You may be getting interference with another device in the environment, or you may have a faulty or discharged battery in chest strap.

Try the following and see if heart rate reading returns to normal/expected rates:

  • Replace the battery in the chest strap (if it is the style of strap where you can do this; some batteries are ‘built-in’).
  • Check the area and remove any devices that might be interfering, such as wireless phones, remote controls, or other exercise equipment with wireless heart rate capability.
  • If you are using the digital contact grips, make sure you are grasping the grips firmly and keeping your hands steady and in place.

Also, some individuals have a body chemistry that is not fully compatible with heart rate telemetry. Try the chest strap on another person to see if they are able to get a reading.

Where do I find the serial number on my machine?

Each Octane Fitness elliptical has two serial numbers; one on the base and one on the console.

On standing ellipticals (Q35/Q37/Q4/Q47):

  • The base serial number is located below the right chrome rail next to where the power supply plugs in to the machine.
  • The console serial number on gray Q35, Q37 or Q47 is located on the bottom edge of the upper console (just above the keypad).
  • The console serial number on black Q35 or Q45 is located on the underside of the console.

On xR3/xR4 seated ellipticals:

  • The base serial number is located on the right side on the metal frame just in front of the flywheel.
  • The console serial number is located on the lower edge of the console (visible with the plastic console cover removed).

On xR6 seated ellipticals:

  • The base serial number is located on the right side in the seat track (visible with the seat in its lowest position).
  • The console serial number is located on the back side of the console (visible with the plastic console cover removed).

Octane Fitness ellipticals can be registered online by clicking here.

What parts can I remove to make it easier to move my elliptical?

Remove moving handlebars to reduce the width of both seated and standing ellipticals.

Remove the pedals on a standing elliptical to reduce the length.

Remove the top cover and then remove the console mast on a standing elliptical to reduce height.

How do I replace or purchase an additional chest strap?

A new or replacement chest strap can be purchased from the Octane Fitness website under the Accessories section of the Support page. Click here to be directed there now.  If you are looking to purchase from somewhere else, please note there are different compatibility requirements for Octane Fitness ellipticals.

xR4ci, xR6e, xR6ce, Q37ci and Q47ci models:  Only non-coded Polar brand chest straps and heart rate monitors can be synced.

Q37xi and Q47xi models:  Any Polar 5KHz, Bluetooth 4.0 or Ant+ (Garmin) chest straps and heart rate monitors can be synced.

I lost my owner’s manual, how do I obtain a new one?

If you have a Q37xi or Q47xi with SmartLink app, you can view the owner’s manual from the “Octane Extras” tab in the app.

Manuals can also be downloaded from the Manuals and Warranties section of the Support page.  Click here to go there now.

Mechanical

All physical parts, movement, noises, plugs, receivers, wheel, handlebars, etc.

What is the flywheel weight on an Octane Fitness elliptical?

Octane Fitness’ flywheels are sized to minimize startup resistance and maintain smooth movement throughout the elliptical motion. It is not relevant to compare flywheels between manufacturers as the linkage drive systems are totally different.

Why is my standing elliptical squeaking?

Something may be loose on your machine. Adjust the following one at a time, testing the machine after each one to see if the squeaking goes away. Make the parts snug, but be careful not to over tighten the plastic components.

  • Tighten the screws under both pedals.
  • Tighten the front and back of the rails.
  • Tighten the shrouds.
  • Check the moving handlebar covers to make sure the plastic is not rubbing with the main shroud.

My machine is unsteady (wobbles) when I use it

It is likely that the levelers on the machine are not properly set for your floor. Try adjusting the position of the machine on your floor. If that does not help, refer to your assembly instructions for adjusting the levelers of your machine.

The resistance on my standing elliptical feels uneven or like it is slipping

This may be a result of the drive belt tension in your unit being too loose.

Follow the instructions in your assembly instructions to remove the top cover. Once the top cover is off, try the following to fix a loose drive belt:

  • Tighten down the belt tensioner bolt on the left hand side of the brake mount.
  • Turn the belt one full rotation.

Place the cover back on top of the machine and try the machine. If it still feels loose continue making these adjustments until the machine slipping disappears.

Moving handlebars are loose

The screws under the handlebar cap may be loose. Remove the handlebar covers and tighten the hex head screws on handlebars.

The resistance on my machine is stuck on a high resistance level, what should I do?

Check the following:

  • Do the level numbers change on the console when you press the level button?
  • When you adjust the levels can you hear the brake motor moving?

If either of the above are working, a magnet or internal brake cable may be stuck or broken. Contact Octane Fitness or your local dealer for assistance.

The roller wheels are noisy or causing a vibration, what should I do?

This is likely caused by a build-up of foreign material on the chrome rails and/or wheels. The problem may be fixed by cleaning the chrome rails and wheels. To do so, wipe down the chrome rails and each wheel with a dry cloth. If needed, use a mild soapy solution to remove excessive build up, then wipe with a dry cloth.

DO NOT use WD-40 or silicone spray. Use of such products will invalidate your product warranty.

Electronic

Power supplies, consoles, keypads, programs, modes, errors, settings, etc.

Why does the console blink on and off?

If your product is a Q45 or Q47, check to see if the power supply LED is blinking, indicating a power supply issue. Console may also blink on and off due to a bad connection between the console and base, check the connection to the console and the connection at the bottom of the console upright tube.

Q45/Q47 error code 11

This code indicates a communication error between the console and lower control board. Try unplugging and re-plugging in the connections on the back of the console and on the lower control board (located under the top main cover) to clear the error.

If the error is not cleared, contact Octane Fitness for additional instructions.

Keypad buttons are not responding

The keypad may be faulty or a button may be stuck.

Follow these steps to identify the problem:

  • Run the keypad diagnostics by holding down Time +/- and Level +/- at the same time.
  • When D3 (Keypad test) is displayed, press Enter to start the test. (On older black models the test begins automatically.)
  • Press each button on the keypad and you should hear a beep. If a button does not beep, the key may be stuck or the membrane could have been damaged and will need to be replaced.
  • To exit the Keypad test, press Pause Clear two times.

Machine goes into pause mode during workout

This may result from the speed sensor being misaligned. Follow the instructions in your assembly instructions to remove the top cover, then test and align the speed sensor.

Where is the heart rate receiver located on my xR6?

The heart rate receiver is located behind the plastic cover on the back of the seat.

Why won’t my elliptical power on?

If you elliptical will not power on, check the following:

  • Is the unit plugged in?  Check at the wall, at the power input of the machine, and at the power supply.
  • Is there power from the wall?  Plug a lamp or radio into the outlet. Does it go on? Does a light switch control the outlet?
  • Is the console properly connected to the base unit?  Refer to your assembly instructions to remove the console and check the connections from the console to the upright tube and the connection below the mast boot.

Why is there no heart rate reading displaying on my console?

If you are wearing a chest strap:

  • Make sure it is snug against your bare skin at the bottom of your pectoral muscles with the Octane Fitness/Polar logo facing away from your body and right side up.
  • Moisten the back of the strap with water for better contact.

If you are using the digital contact grips:

  • Make sure that your hands are firmly grasping the grips and that you maintain a constant grip. If you let go, you will lose your heart rate reading.
  • Contact heart rate readings will override your chest strap reading.

Also, check the heart rate cable connection(s) on the console back (and at the bottom of the seat back on the xR6) to make sure the connectors are properly seated.

Console displaying error code 1, 2 or 3

This is a brake error, indicating that the servomotor may not be working properly.

Check the following items to resolve the issue:

  • Is the brake cable seated properly in the slot on the brake?  Make any necessary adjustments.
  • Is the brake cable cracked or broken?  If so, replace it with a new brake cable.
  • Are you able to manually move the brake?  Do the shoes move freely? Adjust as necessary.

If none of these adjustments resolved the brake error, contact Octane Fitness or your local dealer for assistance.

Q45/Q47 error codes 2, 3, 20, 21, 22, 30, 31 or 32

These error codes indicate a communication error between one of the stride motors and the lower control board.

Follow these steps to identify the issue:

  1. Unplug the unit and swap the two stride motor plug cables located on the lower control board inside the machine.
  2. Plug the unit back in and check the error code again.

If the error code is the same as it was before you swapped the cables, the issue is in the lower control board.

If the error code switched from an error 2, 21, 22 or 23 to an Error 3, 30, 31 or 32, the issue is in the left stride motor.

If the error code switched from an error 3, 31, 32 or 33, to an Error 2, 20, 21 or 22 the issue is in the right stride motor.

Contact Octane Fitness or your local dealer to replace the faulty part.

Where do I plug in my power supply?

On all products, the power input is on the right side of the unit as you face forward (toward the console).

  • Q35, Q37, Q45, Q47:  Near the front beneath the chrome rails
  • xR6:  Near the front (look for the ‘power input’ sticker)
  • xR3, xR4:  At the back below the Octane Fitness logo

I lost my power supply, what do I do?

Replacement power supplies can be purchased on the Octane Fitness website under the Parts section of the Support page. Click here to be directed there now.

The connection button will display “connected” status with a blue Bluetooth logo next to it.

If multiple consoles are present, a list of available consoles will appear in the connected window. Select the desired console from the list and connect to the console with the appropriate model.

What is offline mode?

Offline mode allows you to browse through the SmartLink application to become familiar with the app navigation. SmartLink cannot sync to the console or access any information from the console in offline mode.

Why do I need to enter an email address in my user profile?

This email address becomes your user ID which will enable features like syncing workout history, preferences, profile picture, etc., to the Apple cloud so you can access your data on all your mobile devices. Email addresses are only used to create and confirm your account user ID; Octane Fitness will not user this email address for any other purpose nor will it be sold to any other party.

Does SmartLink require an internet connection?

SmartLink will connect to your xi console via Bluetooth and the app itself will function without an internet connection. However, internet connectivity through Wi-Fi or a mobile network (GSM/3G/4G/LTE) is required to play certain non-workout related videos.
